Electrician

WHAT HE DOES:

Electricians lay out, assemble, install, test, maintain and repair electrical power equipment, fixtures and other electrical components used in the light and power systems of buildings and other structures. They use a wide variety of hand tools and power tools to perform their various tasks. The journeyman Electrician must master both mechanical and technical skills. He must understand the use of meters and specialized testing equipment, be adept at trouble shooting and understand the theory behind the transmission of electrical energy.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Age - minimum 18 years
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Reside in the jurisdiction of the Committee one year prior to making application

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOINT APPRENTICESHIP COMMITTEE:

  • High school transcript
  • Diploma or equivalency certificate
  • Birth certificate
  • One year of Algebra
  • Physically able to perform the work of the trade
  • Pass an aptitude test
  • Participate in a personal interview

 TERMS OF APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING:

  • Length of Indentureship - 5 years
  • Minimum hours of related classroom instruction - 180 hours each year
  • Indentured to the Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee

  • Mechanical Drawing and related sciences
  • Welding
  • Shop Classes
