Ironworker

WHAT HE DOES:

Ironworkers are craftsmen who erect, assemble or install fabricated structural metal products, usually large metal beams, in the erection of industrial, commercial or large residential buildings. Structural Ironworkers erect the steel framework of bridges, buildings and other structures including metal storage tanks and overhead crane runways that support heavy equipment. Reinforcing Ironworkers (rodmen) set steel bars or steel mesh in concrete forms to strengthen concrete in buildings and bridges. Ornamental Ironworkers install metal stairways, catwalks, gratings, grills, screens, fences and decorative ironwork.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Age – minimum 18 years
  • Physically able to perform the work of the trade
  • High school graduate or equivalent

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOINT APPRENTICESHIP COMMITTEE:

  • Pass an aptitude test as selected and administered by the Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee
  • Diploma or equivalency certificate
  • High school transcript
  • Birth certificate
  • Three character references are required
  • Participate in a personal interview

TERMS OF APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING:

  • Length of indentureship – 3-1/2 years
  • Minimum hours of related classroom instruction – 168 hours each year
  • Indentured to Ironworkers Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee

Upper Ohio Valley Building Trades Council

The Upper Ohio Valley Building Trades Council (OVBTC) was chartered on January 17, 1939 in Wheeling, West Virginia. The OVBTC meets every Tuesday of the month, with the meeting location varying between Steubenville, Ohio at the Electricians’ Hall and in Wheeling, West Virginia at the Iron Workers’ Hall.
