Sheet Metal Worker

WHAT HE DOES:

The Sheet Metal Worker is one of construction’s most skilled craftsmen. Only the Sheet Metal craftsman, today, develops from a raw material a finished product. He starts with a flat piece of metal and by utilizing the skills and training he has acquired and learned, proceeds to the completion of the finished article, including its installation, testing and maintenance. The Sheet Metal trade has many advantages; it often combines artistry and beauty with the more technical mechanical skills; it is a fast growing trade in regard to the demand for air conditioning, air purification and climate control in industrial, institutional, commercial and residential applications; it is an extremely diverse trade encompassing not only climatic conditioning of air, but also the utilization of air for veyor systems, metal application for interior and exterior architectural purposes combining function and aesthetics and specialty metal applications, including the fabrication and installation of kitchen equipment.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Age – minimum 18 years
  • High School graduate or the equivalent
  • Physically able to perform the work of the trade
  • Indicate interest, desire and willingness to learn the trade
  • Pass a standardized test as selected and administered by the Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOINT APPRENTICESHIP COMMITTEE:

  • High school transcript
  • Diploma or equivalency certificate
  • Birth certificate
  • Participate in a personal interview

TERMS OF APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING:

  • Length of Indentureship – 5 years
  • Minimum hours of related classroom instruction – 180 hours each year
  • Indentured to the Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee

Upper Ohio Valley Building Trades Council

The Upper Ohio Valley Building Trades Council (OVBTC) was chartered on January 17, 1939 in Wheeling, West Virginia. The OVBTC meets every Tuesday of the month, with the meeting location varying between Steubenville, Ohio at the Electricians’ Hall and in Wheeling, West Virginia at the Iron Workers’ Hall.
